Bring Us Home!  The Need: The original Animal Shelter built in 1985 is no longer able to meet the needs of the lost and homeless pets of our community. Archuleta County faces significant growth in both human and animal populations, and a new animal shelter facility is desperately needed. Growth rate predictions indicate that the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs will need to handle 1,000 incoming pets annually by 2010.

  • PAWS received the go-ahead in 2007 for the Steven Lake Expansion which has forced the Humane Society to move 1½ years ahead of schedule and vacate the old animal shelter at Stevens Lake by September 3, 2007.
  • After interim housing, animals and offices moved into the Phase I building intended for incoming/isolation on November 28, 2007.
  • Department of Agriculture that oversees animal shelters has regulations that dictate that the Phase II adoption center must be completed one year after completion of the Phase I incoming/isolation building.
  • Complete expense of building the new animal shelter project has to be raised through charitable donations.
  • Entire project will cost $1.2 million, and over $950,000 has already been raised.
  • We now need your help to raise the remaining $250,000.
The Mission: The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs provides a safe haven for pets in need, promotes adoptions, reunites lost animals with their owners and humanely reduces pet overpopulation through community education and progressive spay/neuter programs.
  • The Humane Society has become our community's best source of healthy pets. All pets are temperament tested, inoculated, sterilized, and microchipped prior to adoption.
  • The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs has one of the highest adoption rates in the country. Every healthy dog and cat in our care is placed in a good home. Our training programs and the behavior helpline strengthen the owner-pet bond.
  • Each year the Humane Society reunites hundreds of lost pets with their owners.
  • The Humane Society's progressive spay/neuter programs have significantly reduced unwanted litters.
  • The Humane Society is there in times of emergency: whether it is rescuing dogs from a puppy mill, taking in abused or mistreated pets or caring for 100 dogs and cats rescued from Hurricane Katrina.
Cat & LadyThe Solution: The new Animal Shelter facilities will meet the projected animal sheltering needs for Archuleta County for approximately the next 10 years and allow for future expansion when it becomes necessary.
  • The new Animal Shelter facilities will have a true adoption center with a separate isolation building. The pets will be presented more effectively, and there will be "get-acquainted" areas for potential adopters to meet pets up close. A grooming room will enable staff and volunteers to keep the pets looking their best.
  • A separate cattery will promote the health and well-being of cats. It will provide a relaxing environment for volunteers who work to socialize cats. Most importantly, adopters will be able to observe the cats and enjoy the new "get-acquainted" rooms.
  • The building will include an exam room and medical services area. Special ventilation will prevent cross-contamination. A separate building will house animal isolation and impounded and lost pets waiting to be claimed.
  • The new facilities will be more conveniently located for the public. Extended hours will be offered to increase adoptions and make it easier for owners to reclaim their lost pets.
  • Large indoor resource rooms will accommodate classes for staff, volunteers, and the public.
