LOST & FOUND
Found Animals ReportCheck on Your Lost/Found Animal at the Animal Shelter
The Humane Society makes every effort to reunite lost pets with their owners. Every incoming animal is checked for tags and scanned for a microchip. Stray animals become available after being unclaimed for five days. The Humane Society keeps a file of lost/found pet reports and displays the information on their website.

To recover your pet as quickly as possible or to locate the owner of a pet that you have found, you should circulate a detailed description of the animal. Here are some guidelines to assist you.

  1. Fill out the Lost/Found Report Form and call the shelter (the form will help you organize the information you will tell them). Your report will be listed at the shelter for four weeks and then deleted automatically. Renew your report if the animal or owner has not been located within that time.
  2. Use our Lost Pet Kit which contains a poster that can be filled out, photocopied and posted around town.
  3. For a lost pet, visit the animal shelter to check for it within five days of its disappearance. Stray pets are held for five days at the animal shelter before becoming the property of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs. After that, continue to monitor this website and check out all adoptable pets. Occasionally people will feed an animal for days or even weeks before turning it in at the Humane Society.
  4. Continuously monitor our website’s listings in Found Animals Report. The found animals report lists animals that have come into the shelter as strays on the PetFinder website.
  5. If your pet has been microchipped by the Humane Society, call the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery hotline at 1-800-252-7894 and report your pet missing. (If your pet has been microchipped elsewhere, call the appropriate national database.)
  6. Notify your own veterinarian as well as all local veterinary clinics. People who find animals often call the veterinarian to report it, particularly if the animal is wearing a rabies tag which has the veterinarian’s phone number on it. Click here for a list of local veterinarians.
  7. Notify KWUF Radio (264-1400). They will broadcast the information at no charge to you.
  8. Place an advertisement in the Lost and Found section of the Pagosa Sun Newspaper (970-264-2100) or e-mail them. It's free and the classified ads have a high readership.
  9. Place a lost and found ad on Pagosa Daily Post website, which is also free.
  10. Prevent the heartache of losing your dog or cat by always having it wear an identification tag even if it has an identifying microchip. This is especially important when you have just acquired a new pet because it might wander off or get lost while adjusting to its new home.
